Nesmith Library, Windham
Nesmith Library has a mission statement that reminds you with every sentence that we are in NH. Live Free or Die - and it applies to everyone. Our librarians are one of our strongest lines of defense in the pursuit of not only knowledge, but privacy and community building.
The Nesmith Library advances knowledge and promotes literacy, lifelong learning, and the love of reading by providing exceptional services and materials in a variety of formats and technologies. Our mission is to inspire, empower, and enrich the lives of readers of all ages; to be a space where the community comes together to share ideas; and to promote and defend intellectual freedom.
My first impression when walking around the building is that this is an extremely community based location. Libraries are the beating heart of our community, but here, they don’t let you forget it. There is an emphasis on adult learning and resources that goes above and beyond.
This is a library that I would go out of my way to visit when I need to get something done. The abundant table space and natural light really drive home the research vibe.
The Info
Building Amenities ★★★★★
This location is a work-from-home dream. Every library has its niche - they know their patrons. On more than one occasion, I have gone into a library blind hoping to find somewhere to work where my toddler isn’t climbing all over me, only to be disappointed because there are only armchairs. Armchairs are GREAT for getting comfy-cozy with a book, but not so great for frantic typing with carpal tunnel. Nesmith has so much table and desk seating so it is great for this purpose. There is also some outdoor seating in the garden/storywalk area.

Children’s Room ★★★★★
The thing about me is - I love a theme. I’m a complete sucker for a magical vibe and this place has it. The children’s area is castle themed, with small decor touches throughout (see photos). The staff rotates the toys within the castle itself - currently a pop-up tent that looks like a school bus. We saw lots of art supplies, thoughtful book displays, and a staff that was ready to get down on the floor with the kids and have a good time.

Collection ★★★★
To my eye, the collections looked very well stocked and diverse. I spent more time in the children’s room on this visit and noted that there were a lot of newer print books as well as the classics - always great to see. There was a great diversity in the periodicals that were offered.
Friendliness ★★★★
I can’t be unbiased here - a dear friend of mine works at this location. When I go in, I go straight over to her, so I can’t say that I’ve really given off that ‘help me where is everything’ vibe that usually a front desk would pick up on. While I was walking around for this most recent visit, I wasn’t approached, but it may have been due to the fact that I was carrying around a camera on a tripod and they knew I was in the middle of something.
Parking ★★★★★
Plenty of spaces. The only trick is that the driveway itself is a bit hidden at the top of the hill by the fire station, but that’s not an issue.
Programs/Services ★★★★★
For a smaller building, Nesmith has a robust staff with a programs/events calendar to match. They do not have their Google Calendar linked on the website, but you can find it here. Of note, there are programs for seniors, kids, crafts (for adults too!), as well as some virtual events.
More and more locations in the area are implementing the Homebound Delivery Service into their offerings. I can not overstate how huge this is for those that are not able to physically go to the library. I don’t think many people know about this, so please tell everyone you know! Info here.
